The Physico-Technological Institute of Metals and Alloys of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was established in 1958 based on several  subdivisions of the Institute of Machine Science and Agricultural Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. Initially, it was called the Institute of Foundry Production of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, in 1963 it was renamed the Institute of Casting Problems of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, it has had its current name since 1996.

In different years, the Institute was managed by A. A. Gorshkov, a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, candidate of technical sciences M. V. Fixsen, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine V. A. Yefimov, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine V. L. Naidek. Since 2017, the Institute has been headed by A. V. Narivskyi, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

About 300 employees work at the Institute, including two corresponding members of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 16 doctors and 49 candidates of sciences. The structure of the Institute includes 12 scientific departments and several auxiliary divisions.

In the first stage of the Institute's activity, its main tasks were: the development and implementation of new progressive casting technological processes in production, the creation of improved foundry equipment, the introduction of complex mechanization and automation of the main processes of foundry production, and use of new molding materials. During the development of the Institute, the strengthening of its material base and the replenishment of highly qualified specialists, the tasks of the Institute were constantly expanded, in its thematics, along with applied developments, fundamental research began to occupy an increasingly significant place. At the current stage of the Institute's work, its activities are carried out by the main scientific direction approved by the Resolution of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine: research of physico-chemical processes during smelting, processing and solidification of alloys and creation of technological bases for obtaining new materials, development of equipment and manufacture of metal products.

Within this direction, the efforts of scientists of the Institute are mainly focused on solving the following problems:

- study of the processes of structure formation and formation of the properties of cast alloys and castings from them using external energy and physico-chemical actions on the melt;

- development of theoretical and technological foundations of processes for obtaining multilayer cast reinforced structures, composite materials and highly wear-resistant nanostructured surfaces on products;

- development of theory and practical implementation of processes of continuous pouring of steel and foundry-rolling and rotary-conveyor technologies.

Through doctoral and postgraduate studies, the Institute trains highly qualified scientific personnel, including for countries near and far abroad.

Since 1992, the scientific and technical journal "Casting Processes" has been published at the Institute, since 1995 - "Metal Science and Treatment of Metals". The Institute is also a co-publisher of the journal "Metal and Casting of Ukraine".  The Institute is the basic organization of the Association of Foundries of Ukraine. For many years, the Institute maintains close business contacts with leading scientific centers, firms and enterprises in Ukraine and abroad.

Through doctoral and postgraduate studies, the Institute trains highly qualified scientific personnel, including for countries near and far abroad.

In the Physico- Technological Institute of Metals and Alloys of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, there is a specialized academic council for the defense of candidate and doctoral dissertations in the following specialties: "Metallurgy of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and special alloys" and "Foundry production".
