The main areas of activity of the department

Development of theory and practice:

- technologies of modification according to the I and II mechanisms of iron-based steels and alloys with bcc and fcc crystal structure of the metal matrix and the type of its strengthening (carbide, intermetallic , dislocation);

- processes of structure formation at all levels during crystallization, hardening, heat treatment and hot plastic deformation and their influence on the level of physical, mechanical and functional properties of steels and alloys;

- physical and chemical processes of formation of the structure of the surface layer under impact and non-impact loading in conditions of dry and marginal friction and abrasive wear, their influence on tribotechnical properties and wear resistance of iron-based steels and alloys;

- theories of synthesis of foundry heterogeneous wear-resistant and anti-friction alloys based on iron.

Creation:

- new structural steels and alloys based on special purpose iron with minimal cost of alloying (nickel, tungsten, molybdenum). In particular, a wear-resistant cast natural composite based on Fe – C – Cr – N  with structural element "solid lubricant" due to copper doping.

Fe – Cr – Mn – N and Fe – Mn – N alloying systems with unstable austenite and high levels of cavitation resistance and wear resistance.

Current projects

Installation regularities impact changes morphology graphite inclusions and solid phases lubricants for tribotechnical properties and wear resistance pre-eutectoid steels.

Development of the latest technologies for the production of multifunctional protective modules.

The most significant achievements in scientific and practical activities

     Research and establishment of the main regularities of the influence of copper alloying on the formation of the structure, properties and tribotechnical characteristics of pre-eutectoid steels and construction of a composition diagram - structure – properties of copper-doped post-eutectoid steels.

Scientific and technological foundations of the creation of new highly wear-resistant cast austenitic steels of the Fe – C – Mn – N – V – Ti – Nb system , which significantly (many times) exceed the wear resistance of steel 110 G13L under conditions of impact and non-impact loading during sliding friction and abrasive wear. The basis is the established mechanisms of steel strengthening due to the martensitic transformation of austenite or changes in its dislocation structure.

Promising developments

The development of scientific foundations and the creation of technological processes for obtaining high-quality castings from new structural and special steels and iron-based alloys, the chemical composition of which is determined by the application of alloying, modification, dispersion and dispersion nitride strengthening technologies for the needs of the defense industry.
